Recently, I was contacted by the owner of YourOptimalBody.com asking to do a guest post for this site. Your Optimal Body is a blog that promotes healthy, natural weight loss, but I wasn’t sure how that would tie in to hot peppers.
After I was told the post would be about capsaicin for weight loss, I got really excited. Capsaicin — that active component in chile peppers — has a lot of health benefits with one of those perks being that it can actually help with weight management. I knew I loved hot peppers for a reason!
So with that, I’ll turn it over to our guest writer who is quite a character!

I teach people how to drop weight naturally and permanently, but I’m also a chilihead too! And I enjoy a good beer now and then just like everyone else, especially if hot peppers are involved.
Back in the day, planting peppers and walking to and from the cooler was all the exercise I used to get. But it got me thinking…
Do you ever get the feeling that science is just beginning to understand something that you’ve known all along?
We all probably knew beer was at some level good for us, or at least not as bad as what some people thought.
Yet, it’s only been in the last few years where doctors and universities with actual studies are saying that beer can improve heart health, may reduce your risk of developing kidney stones and provides vitamin B and fiber among other things.
Another thing I’ve always known is that peppers, like John Mellencamp said, “Hurt so good.”
My Mayan ancestors only ate tortillas and habaneros (well, for the most part) and they hardly ever got sick.
Getting kidnapped by UFOs is a story for another time.
Anyway, I knew habaneros had health benefits that I couldn’t quite explain and I definitely could not prove.
Science is now finally catching up and the benefits of capsaicin — the pepper’s super power — are coming to light.
To be fair, it has been known for a while that peppers have health benefits. They have been shown to reduce cholesterol levels, support heart health, relieve arthritis joint pain and flush mucus from your nose and lungs.
But in case you haven’t noticed in recent years, there has been an increase in hot pepper popularity.
Demand is going up and even the popular Dr. Oz and Tim Ferriss are getting involved.
What’s more, early studies show the following:
- Capsaicin can slow weight gain due to increased rates of fat oxidation
- Capsaicin improves digestion
- Capsaicin speeds up metabolism
- Capsaicin helps you control cravings due to increased satiety
As if I needed any more reasons to eat hot peppers and drink beer 🙂
We all know that eating less calories can help with weight loss, but if your food is TOO spicy, you may not want to finish it!
Ultimately, we’re chili heads, which means No Hot Pepper Left Behind!
